Almost everyone knows of Breckenridge, Colorado as the place to go when looking for a great winter time ski trip. Many people don't know how great it is for summer adventures though!
In the summer of 2009, San Antonio was going through an absolutely unreal heat wave. We had something close to 50 days of 100+ degree heat. In July of that summer Sarah and I decided we needed to get out of town and go somewhere cooler. So, we made reservations and flew up to Breckenridge, CO.
Sarah and I knew Breckenridge well. We had been there together twice before, but both trips were in the winter. We had to take a look at what Breckenridge had to offer in the summer and we were thrilled to see a multitude of choices.
The first thing and most frequent thing we did was go hiking. The first afternoon we got in around 3pm and hiked up the ski trails. That is where we had to cross the creek as you see in the picture above.
The second day, we made a trip to Mohawk Falls. Neither Sarah nor I were prepared for how out of shape we would feel. It was a great hike. The hike totaled 6 miles and had over 1400ft of elevation change.
Here is a video of the waterfalls you will encounter on the way up to Upper Mohawk Lake:
While in Breckenridge we also spent some time fly fishing in the Blue River and played Tennis at the Breckenridge Municipal Courts.
I would absolutely recommend going to Breckenridge for an active summer vacation. It is a very relaxing trip with easy access from Denver International Airport, beautiful weather and lots of great activities for the fitness enthusiast.
Best,
Nicholas Wood
